Sustainability Intern

City of Grand Rapids

NATURE OF WORK:

The Sustainability Intern will report to the Sustainability and Performance Management Officer and support a variety of job duties. The intern will be assigned projects within the scope of the five categories listed below and may be assigned additional relevant tasks as needed. There may also be opportunity for the intern to complete projects within specific areas of interest.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate student preferred (at a minimum, completion of sophomore year of undergraduate degree)
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel (equations, graph generation, pivot tables)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to conduct thorough research that is professionally formatted
  • Developed organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects
  • Attention to detail
  • Professional etiquette – punctual, reliable, respectful
  • Aligned with City of Grand Rapids values – accountability, equity, collaboration, innovation, customer service, sustainability

WORK HOURS: City Hall is open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Once hired, a work schedule will be determined based on the intern’s availability. Interns are expected to work 15 hours a week. There may be an opportunity to extend the internship through April 2021 depending on funding.

Hours: 15 hours per week

Compensation: $12 – $13 per hour

Planning Intern

Charter Township of Ypsilanti

The Office of Community Standards at Ypsilanti Township is seeking an enthusiastic and hardworking individual to work between 15-30 hours a week with the Planning and Zoning Department for the summer of 2020. The Planning Department assists residents, businesses, and developers with permits and development proposals to ensure projects meet Zoning Ordinance and the Master Plan standards. The Planning and Zoning Department provides expertise and information to elected officials, appointed boards and commissions, Township departments and citizens to assist in understanding and addressing key community issues and priorities. The department promotes and maintains a clean, healthy and safe community through education, cooperation and enforcement of our property maintenance, zoning, nuisance abatement and rental inspection codes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing applications for completeness, writing staff reports, and making recommendations as necessary.
  • Assembling the agenda, applications, and minutes for Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings.
  • Responding to requests for assistance or information regarding the permit and site plan approval process from owners, community groups, and realtors.
  • Assisting with development of educational materials, public workshops, and information sessions.
  • Assisting with other projects or programs as assigned by Ypsilanti Township staff.

Requirements:

  • General knowledge of planning and zoning and/or GIS (Geographic Information Systems);
  • Excellent organizational, writing, communication, and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong research skills;
  • Competency to perform field work;
  • Driver’s license

Part-Time Planning and Zoning Intern

Summer Planning Assistant

City of Big Rapids

Big Rapids’ Neighborhood Services Department is seeking a Summer Planning Assistant. This is a temporary internship position, working 40 hours/week for 12 weeks (total of 480 hours) throughout the summer of 2020. The Planning Assistant will support the Neighborhood Services Director with planning and zoning related tasks, while learning about municipal planning and the daily work of a planning department.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists staff with short- and long-term planning projects.
  • Conducts writing, research, and data collection tasks.
  • Prepares maps and other graphics to illustrate and inform planning proposals.
  • Assists with public outreach and community engagement work.
  • Provides general office support, including assisting the public, organizing & filing, and attending meetings.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

The City will only consider candidates currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a University program in urban planning, geography, or a closely related field. Applicants should possess strong verbal and written communications skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently, and excellent customer service skills. Applicants should have proficiency with computer skills including Microsoft Office, Adobe suite (Illustrator and InDesign), and GIS and have a valid driver’s license.

EXPERIENCE - Entry (0-1 year)

PAY RATE - $11/hour for 480 hours.
